Pastoral is the smell of high summer in the countryside: a cut hayfield, horses somewhere nearby, the feeling of being far away and completely at home at once.
It opens with hay absolute from Les Landes, in the southwest of France, where farmers grow flouve (sweet vernal grass) in fields that release a rush of sweet, green scent the moment they're cut. Labdanum from Spain follows, a resin that reads as honey, beeswax, and amber, warm enough to carry the hay's sweetness through the last long days of the season. Vetiver from Madagascar holds it all to the ground: smoky, smooth, woody, with a faint dampness, like hay after an afternoon storm.
