The scent carries a cultural ghost too: the artists who fled the city to work out here — Zittel, Purifoy, Divola — drawn to the desert's strange mix of abandonment and possibility. Underneath it all, deep geological time: Joshua Tree's basin was once an ocean floor, a fact someone has spelled out in stones, readable from the sky: "THE BOTTOM OF AN OCEAN OF SKY."
