A Year on Earth with Mr. Hell
An erotic memoir by a woman “more predator than prey,” A Year on Earth with Mr. Hell is Young Kim’s completely truthful account of her ten-month affair with the early punk instigator and writer Richard Hell. Set in a Warholian swirl of art, music, and fashion, and spanning continents, Young Kim processes her grief over the 2010 death of her long-time partner Malcolm McLaren, the bon vivant conceptualizer of the Sex Pistols and icon of punk fashion design.
Hell, known for his own erotic writing, inadvertently unleashed the book when he asked Kim to write something provocative about their first night together. The result added a dimension to their sexual relationship: artist and her muse.
The book design, by Studio Marie Lusa, is an homage to Olympia Press, the notorious publisher of Lolita, he Story of O, Naked Lunch, he SCUM Manifesto, and Alexander T rocchi’s Helen and Desire (the inspiration behind McLaren’s iconic “I Groaned With Pain” T-shirt.) The first printing was produced in a numbered edition by Ubu Gallery. This new edition was produced by Normandie Roto Impression, printer of Pléïade Editions, in a part of France famous for printing literature’s most legendary books, including Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du Mal. Rather than added to the garbage of the world, this book will last and can be treasured.
